SEEING SOUND, 2025-26

Sound is most commonly experienced as an audible and tactile sensation. However, in 1680 the English polymath Robert Hooke discovered that sound waves can also be seen as well as heard and felt through the process Hans Jenny would later coin as ‘Cymatics’, after the Greek word ‘κῦμα’ (kŷma) meaning wave.

This fairly simple yet remarkable process made apparent the interconnectedness of the body within space and allude to a vast world of hidden mechanics that shape and inform our lives.

Reflecting upon these limits of how we can percieve our surroundings I set out to capture the imperceptible forces shaping our environment at the lowest thresholds of human, 12 hertz. From one exposure to the next and with varying durations of exposure time the world that the camera percieved changed. From dense, complex configurations to those filled largely with emptiness each image offers a glimpse into the uncertainty of what it means to be human.
